General Milley: We don't take an oath to a wannabe dictator. [View all]

General Mark Milley, the outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke on Friday at his relinquishment and retirement ceremony at Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall and delivered powerful words in defense of American democracy. After being threatened with execution by criminally indicted former President Donald Trump in recent days, Milley made his loyalties clear.

"We don't take an oath to a country. We don't take an oath to a tribe. We don't take an oath to a religion. We don't take an oath to a king, or queen, or a tyrant or a dictator. And we don't take an oath to a wannabe dictator. We don't take an oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America, and we're willing to die to protect it," Milley told the crowd.

When asked about Trump's threats on a recent episode of 60 Minutes, Milley commented, "I'm not gonna comment directly on those, those things. But I can tell you that this military, this soldier, me, will never turn our back on that Constitution."

Gen. Milley has made similar remarks in the past. In November 2020, following Donald Trump's loss in the election and amid growing concerns that Trump would use the military to stay in power, Milley told CNN, "We are unique among armies. We are unique among militaries. We do not take an oath to a king or a queen, a tyrant or a dictator. We do not take an oath to an individual."
