Becoming rich and hanging with right-wingers might explain it - but money doesn't automatically turn people to the dark side. I think there's a desire for power or to be close to the source of power that is an even greater influence than money. A pretty fair number of people you'd think would have known better got sucked into the black hole of Trumpworld, some temporarily until they figured out what they'd got into; others becoming true believers. Power is even more seductive than money, and if you're someone who could be called an authoritarian follower you'll eagerly suck at that teat, no matter what it might eventually cost you.
