Bamford's earlier writings on the NSA were good, particularly The Puzzle Palace, which came out in 1982, as well as his follow up works on the NSA in the early and mid 2000s.

But his recent writings have taken a sharp turn away from his prior objective reporting. His 2023 book on foreign spies has been criticized as "the most venomous anti-Israel polemic published since Mearsheimer and Walt’s The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy in 2007."

He seems to have lost it, much like his old friend at the Nation, Christopher Hitchens, ended up losing it and endorsing George W. Bush for President in 2004.
