(20,976 posts)There was a fundraiser here in Grand Rapids in 2007. It was at a mansion that was a friend's friend's. We were out having beers and he said, "hey, you want to stop at a house and meet John McCain?" I thought he was joking. But nope, here we are, parking in back of this giant mansion in East grand Rapids and walking right in and there were a bunch of people talking to John McCain. So McCain is walking around and gets to me and shakes my hand and asks me my name. He was really warm, we chatted about a couple things and then he moved on. But then about 20 minutes when we decided to leave, he asks, "Hey John, where you going?" He remembered my name, and came back over and we chatted some more. He could not have been warmer as a person, and he was totally in his element enjoying himself. Working the room and genuinely seemed excited and joyful at meeting random people that he'd probably never talk to again. There's a special type of talent that it takes to work a room like he was, and that talent doesn't work unless you have a genuine interest in being nice to other people. I was blown away by the experience. Of course, I voted Obama, but I always knew that McCain was a good guy.
