But the Electoral College wasn't a plot by the slave owning South (Alexander Hamilton was one of its main proponents). That it ended up helping the South is definitely true, but that wasn't its intent. Most of the folks who designed the Constitution figured the vast majority of presidential elections would be decided in the House of Representatives anyway, believing very few men would get 50% plus one of the Electoral College like Washington did (they also didn't foresee parties...so this makes sense...with no party nominees you could have a dozen people running and almost assuredly no one would have a majority). Obviously they were mistaken, as Congress has only voted twice on the winner.
