The EC was always about the wealthiest people (slaveholders chief among them) putting checks in place to protect their power, because they didn't trust the general public. The EC was one of the means employed to keep the public from getting the upper hand against the powerful.

BTW, you surely realize that in Alexander Hamilton's day, people in the North owned slaves, too. Hamilton was one of them. in fact, he not only bought slaves for himself, but also bought them for other people. It's safe to say that he had a vested interested in protecting the power and privilege of the wealthy white class, and that's why he found the EC so appealing as a means for preserving it.
