Among orcas, the postmenopausal female is the leader of the group, making sure they get to the best hunting grounds and using the best strategies for thei prey. She's not a baby sitter because she's the one who doesn't have to worry about sex and reproduction, at all.

Our closest relatives, chimps and bonobos, don't have menopause but their periods of estrus grow father and farther apart as they age. The're nt just baby sitters, either. They would seem to be the educators, guides and occasional diplomats.
