My great-grandparents were potato-famine -- or "an Gorta Mór" -- immigrants to the USA ; translation: "the Great Hunger." We were brought up with cooperation and sharing deeply ingrained in us.

To answer your question, here's my view: The self-anointed firmly believe in the opposites of cooperation and sharing: greed, discord, conflict. Kinda' reminds me of what the Choctaw Nation and other indigenous peoples endured over the past couple of centuries.
