I've been thinking about this a lot (media reporting) [View all]

The duties of "the press," as more or less outlined in the Constitution, are completely incompatible with corporate ownership. I know that's not a huge revelation, but the press is virtually the only non-governmental responsibility in the constitution. When our right to clear, truthful information is up against shareholder value (more clicks, more eyeballs), we lose. Every. Single. Time.

There's no going back from it unless we unwind the legislation that permitted entertainment giants to also own the press. And it's also completely unsurprising that young people ignore traditional media.

I'm not so different from them myself. I depend very heavily on DU's powers of aggregation, plus the crowd-sourced bullshit sniffer. In that way, we are very much like the young people who get their news from the comments sections.
