15. One simple reason ( of many) for their quick movement upstream

Dam removal has resulted in vast quantities of silt being introduced to stream flow. Salmon, trout and other fish don’t like it much. Salmon need clean gravel stream bottom to deposit their eggs for fertilization. Being smart, well traveled fishies, they keep moving upstream until they get above the silty water. That happens in the section of the river above the former Copco Reservoir.
