when the Republicans chose an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy to head their party they knew that they were ending democracy in the US. In an unheard of action some of the Republican leadership, the Bushes, Cheneys, Romney, etc. refused to support Trump. There was even talk of having a brokered convention to choose another candidate. But the Republicans put party before country and chose Trump because he was so wildly popular with their authoritarian base that they could not win without him.
For the sake of one election the Republicans put the continuation of democracy on the line.
