The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was originally established by Congress in 1958 as the National Cultural Center when President Eisenhower signed bipartisan legislation.

Following President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Congress passed legislation renaming it in his honor as a "living memorial", which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 23, 1964.
