The book cover of Barbara McQuade's new book is brilliant! [View all]
The title of Barb's book is THE FIX, Saving America from the corruption of a mob style government.
(Barb McQuade was on Velshi earlier. Her books comes out this week.)
The cover of the book depicts a china/porcelain plate with the seal of the United States in the center, The plate has been broken and repaired. It has been repaired with gold. Kintsugi is a method of repair primarily associated with Japan.
The point is that when something precious and beautiful has been broken, one does not discard it. One repairs it and one repairs it with gold (rather than invisible glue), so the repair is visible and honored as well.
This is a perfect analogy for what needs to happen with our Democracy. It can be repaired. It will never be the same again, but the repair itself will be beautiful.
From Brittanica.com: "kintsugi, traditional Japanese technique of repairing ceramics with lacquer and a metal powder that is usually made from gold or silver. The centuries-old practice is often used to mend treasured objects by beautifying the cracks, which serve as a visual record of the objects history. Although kintsugi is a technique unique to Japan, it has been applied to ceramics from China and Korea, leaving a recognizable Japanese mark on these otherwise foreign objects."
The traditional kintsugi method utilizes urushi, a natural lacquer made from the sap of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), a relative of poison ivy. Urushi has been used in the production of Japanese lacquerware for millennia and is glossy, durable, and water-resistant."
