California Superintendent of Public Instruction top vote getter is a rightwing nut because of vote splitting among Dems [View all]
Richard Barrera will gather most of the votes from the other candidates and swamp her in the general election
Conservative school board president Sonja Shaw, a Trump-aligned Republican known for her role in the high-profile battle over transgender athletes in school sports, has advanced to the November runoff to serve as Californias next state superintendent of public instruction.
Shaw, president of the Chino Valley Unified School Board, will likely face Richard Barrera, the San Diego school board president, who garnered the largest portion of a splintered Democratic vote.
Arne Johnson, an advocate with the Bay Area-based transgender rights group Rainbow Family Action, said he wasnt surprised to see Shaw advance to the general election, but worries that shell continue to have a platform for stunts and politically motivated heat toward transgender children.
Shell get trounced in the general election, he said. Its just more funding and more time for her to cause damage.
Barrera said he respects that Shaw as a school board president brings a local perspective to the race.
