(21,786 posts)And for what it's worth I'm not exactly an admirer of Chavez--I don't care for his choice in allies or his methods of stifling judicial independence and press dissent; I'm not so sure that "progressives", whatever that means, should support someone who's ready to get in bed with Iran and Syria and who has reporters locked up for "insulting the president", or who has a judge locked up for three years without trial because he doesn't like a decision. But leaving that to one side, I also think that the evidence shows that the elections in Venezuela were free, fair and democratic, and that the Venezuelan constitution appears to be clear that new elections are only necessary if Chavez is incapable of discharging the duties of his office; a postponement for health reasons seems reasonable enough, honestly, although if he's as ill as he appears he's more likely to have a mass than a swearing-in.
