So now he has a rifle that weighs 4 to 8 times what a regular deer/sniper rifle weighs, that shoots heavy, expensive, and uncommon ammunition, that he has to hump around, and that does not improve his skill as a shooter. Yay for him.
It takes uncommon skill to use a .50 to its full potential. If he can reliably hit a dinner plate no farther than 400 yards with a deer rifle, then that's his maximum effective limit, regardless of type of rifle cartridge. And 400 yards is a pretty darn good shot.
And a 400 yards, a decent .30-06 bullet still has more energy than an AR-15 or AK-47-ish rifle at point-blank range.
Common hunting cartridges are accurate to 800 yards or so. If you can't shoot accurately past that, a .50 does nothing for you unless you're shooting at armor plate.
