Personally, I'm rating him based on what I believe he could have accomplished. Unforced errors like appointing members of the opposition party to posts (something no president would be expected to do, certainly not something that a Republican president would do) count against him, as does starting negotiations from the center or center-right instead of starting from, say, positions advocated by himself while a candidate and then working toward a compromise from there. Continuing and escalating policies both he and most of us strongly disagreed with - these are unforced errors, things that wouldn't have been reasonably expected of any Democratic president and would not have been expected based on his campaign rhetoric, things he has direct control of and could have easily done differently.
