(3,135 posts)But I do not think the use of the insult was necessarily homophobic. In most cases, I believe the insult was directed at Graham and the rest of the GOPs publicly professed and extraordinarily hypocritical homophobia. It says to Mr. Graham, in essence, if you and your party want to join with the ignorant and homophobic Evangelical extremists, you had better be ready for a dose of you own god damned medicine.
That was how I always viewed the references to Lady Lindsey. Not as a smack at homosexuality but, rather, at the utter hypocrisy of closeted homosexuals on the Right who would eagerly and willingly watch their brothers and sisters burn at stakes set aflame by people of their own Republican Party.
But even so, the point is well taken: attacking Grahams presumed sexual orientation with mockery is wrong. And I think its inefficacy as a rhetorical device has been proven by the complaints herein.
