(14,890 posts)no one should ever be in the fast lane. Say I am doing 110 down I-5, I should be in the right lane, because some guy 300 miles behind me is going 120.
How about people just kinda follow the speed limit. then this issue becomes mostly moot. A cop can look at anyone on the road, and if they are in the fast lane, doing 20 under the speed limit, he can politely flag them down and let them know that's inappropriate, because he wont have to spend all his time ticketing dirtbags doing 20 over and swerving around the lanes to pass people, so that they can get to walmart 36 seconds faster than anyone else.
My observation is that most of the crashes on open road seem to come from people making lane changes, rather than those going in a straight line. Ive been told by at least one civil engineer, though I dont have any links to back this up, that studies have also show that to be more than anecdotal on my part.
Faster cars on the left, slower on the right. Legally, you should be going no faster than the speed limit. Therefore, legally, the left lane should be for people doing the speed limit, the right for people going under the speed limit. If you chose to break the law, that's up to you, but in my opinion that limits the righteousness of any gripe with other chose to obey the law.
As to faster, more impatient drivers.. lets apply that same thought process to signal lights. A faster, more impatient driver may decide to pull through a red light without stopping, which is an inherently dangerous maneuver. Therefore, if more people would follow the simple concept of treating every light, red or green, as a stop sign, that would minimize that risk.
