179. I've done some reading, and I'm of two minds

Part of me goes along with the logic presented in the article: spiteful wingnuts hastened a man's death and heightened his suffering. It's despicable. Somebody should have been prosecuted for fraudulently presenting themselves as a hospital official to PayPal.

However....

Part of me says that the method used to raise the money was ill advised: Look, I get it. Somebody tells you that they need money, and time is of the essence. Life & death is at stake. Here's the thing -- if we're talking about a DUer who needs a grand to get home; get to a funeral; get out of an abusive house, and 200 people kick in with $5 -- that is one thing. Trying to raise 50 Gs and not having some kind of trust set up at a bank or a 501c(3) is another. $50K is a lot of money, and having an impartial third party be made aware of the situation and allowing them to act as a go-between protects the beneficiary and the benefactors.
