(805 posts)a mandate to pay insurance companies, which is a profit system, is the problem. A mandate to pay taxes into a nonprofit system, the government (like universal care in countries like the UK), is much more palatable. I wouldn't mind paying into a system that it's only job is to make sure everyone gets the care they need, and that cost is affordable for everyone. I don't like paying into a system where their job is to get out of covering as much as possible so their fat cats get their big salaries and bonuses, at still a high cost for most people.
I lived in a country with universal care for 10 years, I know what it's like and it was fantastic! That is what made me absolutely loathe insurance companies. I realize that ACA is better than nothing, I realize that single payer probably wouldn't have passed, but I didn't see Obama fight for it and I would have respected that a lot more than giving up the fight before it even started.
I guess it's hard for me because I saw how incredibly well it all can be done and confused as to why we can't do it. I know the republicans hate on the idea and that's part of the problem. I heard them say how horrible it is in the UK and so many who never visited, much less lived there think it's evil because republicans say so - they are being fed a line of shit! It's not perfect, but I never saw anything happen there that I haven't seen happen here ten fold. Nothing will be perfect - but at least over there, people aren't going bankrupt or not getting care at all because they can't afford premiums/copays/deductibles. I also never ran into a problem where they wouldn't pay for my medication that were of me and my doctor's choosing and some of them were pretty expensive - and to be honest, not life saving or essential. I never saw other people being denied either, but I can't say for certain this doesn't happen at all. I just never experienced it myself.
I hope ACA leads to something like what other countries have done, but it don't hold out a lot of hope at this time.
