(146,412 posts)been that the United States should not supply arms or military aid to any other country. Period. I formed that opinion in the early to mid 1960s, based on a belief that we and other major nations were supplying the necessary materials for other nations to wage war, and that we should unilaterally stop doing that and apply pressure to all nations supplying arms to cease doing so.
Without arms supplied by the major industrial nations, warfare would change dramatically. We, and other major nations, have materially contributed to wars of all kinds, from civil wars within nations to wars between nations.
However, my position has never been one that was very likely to be taken up by the United States or any other major nation.
That's a pity. I have resigned myself to that, since I see no possibility that it can be attained.
We should be providing only humanitarian aid anywhere outside of our own country, and we should be generous with that aid. Beyond that, we should be hands off in disputes outside of the United States. If they must fight, they can do so with weapons they are capable of creating for themselves.
