early Christians appropriated pagan holidays as "Christian" in an attempt to win converts. So they grafted events in Christ's life (birthday, death) as happening on or near pagan traditional feasts (mid winter solstice, spring equinox) and kept the pagan symbols (evergreen tree and more lights to ward away the darkness at mid winter, eggs, bunnies, and other procreation symbols at "easter" - even the name was pagan).

Don't like bunnies or chicks hatching... don't usurp the pagan holidays.
