10. Reconstructive surgery I had for war wounds was based on animal testing

I had an experimental bone graft that used bone marrow from my hip to replace half my lower mandible by "growing" new bone tissue.

Later, I was sick when I learned how the new bone graft was developed: by shooting German Shepherds in the jaw with assault rifles, then trying new reconstruction techniques on them.

I guess I was a guinea pig, too. My graft failed 7 years later. It turned out that the technique worked well only for short-span grafts; long-span grafts couldn't handle the torque over time. It was experimental, after all.

I'd like to hear the ALS Association's response to Anderson. Is she correct about the testing and their sponsorship?

ETA: I forgot to mention that I discovered last night that I've received three icebucket challenges...
