The media doesn't care, the Republicans don't care, and the Democrats don't care. The people care though, and as we're seeing with state initiatives to raise minimum wage to fast food workers fighting for higher wages, the people will be ones to do what the media and politicians won't do including kicking politicians out of office that don't support a living wage.
