They are primarily a device to keep the lower-classes in their places, subservient and docile against all the mounting economic injustices levied against them.

There's a reason why the most prominent, outspoken key backers of gun control in this country are billionaires like Bloomberg and Gates. They've seen the writing on the wall. And the last thing they need is an armed populace of "have nots" pissed off and angry while the "haves" laugh all the way to the bank.
