He never wanted to own a football team - he just wanted to sue the NFL on anti-trust grounds and collect a paycheck. And the reason the NFL won the suit is just that - their (counter) claim was that Trump and a couple others were not in the business to own football teams, but merely to gouge the NFL. He talked a majority into moving the USFL season from the spring to the fall, to bring the issue to a head, and they went to court and lost, and that was that. The USFL owners who actually DID want to be a part of pro football were wiped out by Trump's cabal.
The USFL was probably doomed anyway, but even 30 years ago Trump was a con man and huckster.

Trump is being used as a diversion so noone will look too closely at Jeb, the "not quite as stupid

Hard for me to tell if Trump carries water for Jeb or Walker. Trump goes very easy on them both.
