Her mother initially gave her up for adoption, but later changed her mind.[2] Katrina had a short-lived marriage at a young age, which produced one son. In 1997, at the age of 20, she was arrested for shoplifting, to which she pleaded no contest, received deferred adjudication, and the case was then dismissed and sealed.[3] In 2006, she earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Texas at Dallas.[4][5]
Political career
After voting for Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, she soon joined the Tea Party movement, where she became an activist. She actively supported Ted Cruz in the 2012 Senate race in Texas and appeared on stage with him on election night.[4]
In the 2014 Texas Congressional elections, Pierson challenged Pete Sessions in the Republican primary to represent Texas' 32nd district. Her candidacy was endorsed by Rafael Cruz and Sarah Palin, while Ted Cruz offered praise, but stopped short of an endorsement. In the election, she obtained 36 percent of the vote, losing to Sessions, who received 63 percent.[6] She subsequently went on to become spokesperson for the Tea Party Leadership Fund.[4]
In January 2015, Pierson attended a meeting for Tea Party activists in Myrtle Beach with Ted Cruz. While in Myrtle Beach, she also met with Trump. She met with Trump or his aides a few more times in the spring. Pierson introduced Trump at his September campaign rally in Dallas. In November 2015, she was hired as the national spokesperson for Trump's campaign.[4] She subsequently appeared frequently on television, sometimes drawing attention in her own right.[7]
In an interview on CNN in December 2015, she wore a necklace made of bullets, creating debate on Twitter and several media mentions.[8]
In January 2016, a message Pierson had shared on Twitter about the national origins of the leading 2012 presidential election candidates came to light, garnering rebuke from many commentators.[9][10] The message stated: "Perfect Obama's dad born in Africa, Mitt Romney's dad born in Mexico. Any pure breeds left?"
Personal life
In 2015, Pierson was living in Garland, Texas, with her son Christopher, where she had founded a local Tea Party group.[5] She currently serves on the Texas Tea Party Caucus advisory committee. Pierson has previously served on several local committees, including one that advises Dallas Area Rapid Transit.
