(280 posts)The American Baptist minister and activist, Martin Luther King Jr., became a great leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement through the speeches he made and the actions he took based upon principle.
After the shooting, members of The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church embodied these principles by immediately forgiving the shooter despite the immense suffering his actions caused (forgiveness purges the poison that is hate). The Emanuel AME Church is an awesome role model for the Nation as well as the principles of humility, love and forgiveness which Martin Luther King Jr. also studied.
It's not easy to do these things, but it is very necessary to heal and break the cycle of violence while also confronting and bringing attention to an injustice. It takes Humility, Love and Forgiveness. Whether or not you believe in God or read the Bible, the wisdom contained within these principles are sound universal truths.
"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" -- Romans 3:23
"Judge not, that ye be not judged." -- Matthew 7:1
"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." -- Matthew 6:14-15
"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." -- Romans 12:19
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." -- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
"Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." -- 1 John 3:15
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;" -- Matthew 5:44
