(42,023 posts)I've been homeless, and more than once --and I've been on both sides of the behavior you describe. One of the things my time on the street taught me well is the divisions and sub-divisions in society. How easy it is for us to "other" each other with fairly superficial differences. Through in something like race, or sexuality, the the othering is profound, and wide.
My curiosity about this behavior sparked my early interest in politics and made me a feminist. "Helping" also has varying degrees of both intent and effectiveness. "Helping others" can be done as an ego exercise, although arguably that doesn't matter if the help reaches where it needs to go. However, where the ego-driven help hurts, is where the ego doesn't allow for what is actually needed. Sites like JPR, presumably want to "help" but, through ego, have misidentified both the problem and the solution, especially when it comes to black lives. In that way, it causes harm. In that way, it is not a harmless website that should be ignored, but an active and destructive part of part of the Internet, however microscopic in scope.
I have emailed the SLPC about the site, although I don't expect it to grow in any way. I've seen enough.
