There's some theories in environmental sciences that a general nuclear exchange between the superpowers would only create a demi-global genocide north of the equator.

The southern hemisphere would be much warmer and have less land mass, but it would be possible for scattered bands of mutated humans to survive down there. Until the roaches become sentient.
