(4,062 posts)I am a Democrat because I grep up in the upper midwest. You don't grow up in a harsh environment where 40 below is common without recognizing the important role of community. That unforgiving environment punishes every equally and doesn't care about minor details like who looks like what -- to beat it we all have a responsibility to dedicate our particular talents for the greater good whenever and wherever we can. My father was blue collar to the core and as a child I learned first hand the difference between good and bad bosses came down to how much they cared about their employees' well being. I came from a lower class family -- I completely owe my place in life to a superior subsidized public education through university and as a child of the cold war I took a hard technical education because I thought that was where I could do the most good. As a result, I firmly believe in the value of investing in people (giving them developmental, medical and economic stability) and in letting them discover who they are without moralistic criticism as long as no-one else is being hurt. I want a strong community and as such I reject the social Darwinism of the Republican party.
