I want to think, at least, that prior to about 1990 there was some balance.

But, my entire adult life has seen them go further and further unhinged, the media go from tacitly behind them to overtly and now gleefully behind them, and the general population get more and more stupid and mean spirited.

I saw this coming and got very politically active in the 2000s, but after 10 years (and the 2010 midterms) saw it was a losing battle.
