(5,626 posts)part of the job he once held with Sony. That is private disability insurance or long term disability, and it pays about 30% (up to 40%) of what the person's salary was while working. Losing 2/3 of one's income plus medical expenses is not something most people want to do for the hell of it. Both federal (SSDI) and private plans demand CONSTANT updates on one's medical condition, and they demand CONSTANT reports from doctors indicating that the patient is still unable to work (most of the disability programs do yearly check-ins after awhile but much more frequent check-ins initially). The initial application processes are exceptionally tough, and if you don't have a disability that can be seen via imaging, it can be nearly impossible to get disability.
To get SSDI a doctor who is qualified must determine that you are disabled PERMANENTLY AND INCAPABLE OF ANY WORK. Very few doctors are willing to write fake/extremely exaggerated reports as the first application is frequently denied, and many people have to go to court to get SSDI. Most doctors aren't willing to support a patient that they don't consider permanently disabled.
I get that you think based on your neighbor (I guess you are implying that you know all about his condition as well since you sarcastically implied that he must not have a real back problem?) that disability is handed out like candy, and that there are layabouts everywhere who would rather find a doctor willing to write reports and updates on their "condition" and receive approx $900 a month from the federal gov than work a job that pays many times that amount. Oh, I forgot. He has a "sweet deal" from Sony, which according to you cheated his way into -- be careful with those assumptions/accusations.
I will never understand the extremely nasty streak in this country that is very visible when the disabled and/or sick are being discussed. I've seen the "x isn't reeaally sick" objection when a person has no idea what another is experiencing nor have they spoken at length with qualified physicians about x. There are many soldiers with debilitating PTSD who cannot work normal jobs. Yet there are types who would claim that they are not really sick -- "he looks fine to me! He sits around on his porch!"
