they had an editorial group that they put together to combat "fake news" - however, the Right Wingers howled in pain that this editorial group was going to "unfairly" target Republicans/conservatives because I think one member of the group was known as a liberal. So, Facebook disbanded the editorial group and let the bullshit fly. This was pre-Trump, but Republicans already knew that a lot of the "fake news" out there was targeted towards them.
