(46,179 posts)My mom, almost 80, and a great-grandmother, does.
She has to supplement her limited retirement; she's fiercely independent. She works 20 hours a week with 4 clients: cognitively disabled adults, young and older. She drives them places. She shadows them at "jobs" offered in the local community so that they can do something "productive;" mostly stocking shelves or cleaning up. She supervises them while they work. She teaches them social skills and communication skills. She serves, and is paid minimum wage to do so, to supplement her SS.
She refuses to take monetary help from us. She WILL let us help her with some physical work. When we show up to help with physical chores, we bring bags of groceries, because she still struggles to make ends meet. When her car or house needs major repairs, she takes on more working hours; then she gets exhausted and sick.
