I'm a Buddhist, and one of the first things we learn is to tame our negative emotions. The antidote to anger is patience. The antidote to hate is love. We have this concept called "boddhicitta," which loosely translates as loving kindness for all sentient beings - yes even the deplorables. It is the desire that all sentient beings be liberated from suffering and be happy. And the intention to do what we can to help people be happy. Anger is just an emotion, and while is SEEMS and FEELS real; it's not. It has no mass. You can't put anger on a scale and weigh it. It is a temporary emotion that arises in the limbic system of your brain and then passes.
There is no one out there, who creates your anger. You create it all by yourself, mostly because it's a habit. It took me a while to not be run by my anger, and believe I used to be a very very angry person about everything. I still experience anger, I just don't nurture and feed it anymore.
Republicans lie primarily to get the power to rig the political process to maintain power and get money. They are consumed with the insatiable relentless pursuit of more and more money. They worship money. It is their god. But does it make them really happy? The lies that they tell us and themselves are mental delusions, based on their delusional belief that money will give them security, freedom from want, freedom from disease. It's all a delusion. When we die, we can't take any money with us. We can't even take our bodies with us.
I guarantee you 100% that people, who worship money as the very highest of all values are not truly happy. They certainly aren't content, or why would they keep chasing after money. If $10 million would make someone happy, would $20 million make them twice as happy? Seeing their insatiable greed as the root of their corruption helps to understand the root of their suffering.
Negative emotions are not "bad." They are just emotions, whose root is pure energy. If you can channel that energy into some sort of beneficial action that actually contributes to making things better and people happier, you will be a long way to taming your anger. For me, my anger about politics has been transformed into greater and greater resolve to kick the bums out.
We cultivate loving kindness through meditation. I'll leave you with a Buddhist prayer called "The Four Immeasurables." The best way of cultivating wholesome attitudes towards all sentient beings (yes, even the deplorables) is through meditation. Among the many topics of meditation taught by the Buddha, there are four specifically concerned with the cultivation of loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity. These four are called the Four Immeasurables because they are directed to an immeasurable number of sentient beings, and because the wholesome karma produced through practising them is immeasurable. The four are also called the sublime states of mind because they are like the extraordinary states of the mind of the gods.
May all sentient beings be free of suffering and the causes and conditions of suffering.
May all sentient beings be happy and have the causes and conditions of happiness.
May all sentient beings have the bliss of supreme accomplishment of enlightenment.
May all sentient beings be free of attachment and aversion.
We Buddhists don't proselytize to convert people. But if someone asks for teachings, it is freely given. If you are truly interested in learning how to tame your negative emotions, seek out an authentic teacher. There are Buddhist centers in almost all large US cities.
