Back around 1980, shortly after people were first allowed to buy landline phones outright, I recall a service becoming available for cleaning them. Local supermarkets contracted with a company that did the cleaning. You'd drop your phone off at the supermarket's customer service desk. The company would pick them up, take them off to their own site, clean and sanitize them inside and out, then return them to the store for customer pick up.
