(550 posts)is the way this thing is going to look.
Bush was the de-facto incumbent, carrying on the legacy of an administration enthusiastically elected but no longer at its most popular by election year (albeit for very different reasons) and Dukakis the stiff, drab Massachusetts governor seeking to dethrone him.
Romney has a far greater cash advantage than Dukakis could've dreamt of, but he's also considerably less likeable & is up against a far more charismatic opponent in Obama. That he has hitherto been unable to open up a real lead in the polls is, as far as I'm concerned, extremely bad news for him. I think that as the year rolls on the negatives against this relative unknown quantity begin to pile up, as his stiff, odd nature is exposed during the debates, I envision Obama pulling away and winning far more comfortably than currently expected. Were it not for the inbuilt GOP cash advantage and a spineless, subservient media, I think we'd be looking at the sort of landslide not seen since the early 1980s.
