Attacking the legality of the evidence looks to me to be much more of a public opinion move. They have to stake a position which allows for some doubt in the minds of their followers.
It doesn't have to be true, it just has to be plausible enough to confuse the issue for a certain special kind of person. Do that and the follower defaults to believing whatever the Republican told him.
What makes it so very frightening is that it's looking like the Trump Administration is soon going to have no legal standing, no support, and nothing but forty million armed redneck yahoos on their side. That might be all they need.
