The armed guard engaged the shooters and exchanged fire with them. When the shooters were shooting at the guard they weren't shooting at students. That is a good thing. The guard was also able to shelter several students behind his car and allow them to escape unharmed. The shooters ultimately chose to take their own lives as they thought the police were closing in. The sooner the bad guys think they are doomed, the better. Having someone on the scene that can respond to the threat faster than waiting for the result of a 911 call is a GOOD thing. Paranoid fears of a guard or policeman having an evil gun aside.
