39. I was raised under Gothardism. Currently, all my materials are with my therapist.

Until the Duggar scandal broke in the news, I had no idea they were connected to Gothard, but it sure explains a lot.

Another funny thing, I never put all the pieces together to realize how Gothardism actually WAS a cult. I just thought I was unlucky enough to be raised by extreme fundy parents. But, understanding that it operates like a cult, things that I could never understand about my childhood and my ongoing struggles to overcome it makes so much more sense.

It's hard to overcome mental programming when you don't even realize that you've been brainwashed in the first place.

I'm glad this group is finally getting the scrutiny it deserves.
