(290 posts)Identity theft, and fraud caused by identity theft, is not something one can fix overnight. It's a major concern, and it can dramatically impact one's life, financial and otherwise.
We catch fraudulent applications quite a bit where I work, because we have a very robust and well-funded loss prevention division that screens our clients carefully and, if fraud is found, aggressively counters it. Just last week we had a fraudulent application, and when we contacted the "client" by the phone number reported in the credit bureau, it was discovered that there were 12 recent inquiries in the last six months on her credit. That damaged her credit score tremendously, and now she has a lot of work to do getting it corrected.
I rather doubt you'd be quite so flippant about it if it happened to you.
