I learned some years back, before 9/11, that if you plan far enough ahead they may not be too expensive. And I'm willing to pay the premium. That said, a year or so back I needed to make a trip on short notice and did fly coach, because the first class ticket was going to be more than I was willing to fork over. On the way back home, the gate agent, shortly before boarding, announced that a first class seat was available for fifty dollars, so I went straight to the check-in desk and grabbed it They refunded the $25 fee for my checked baggage, so it felt like a bargain.
I'm a former airline employee, started the job several years before any sort of security, so I'm singularly unimpressed with the way it is these days.
