(289 posts)... who would've been effective Democrats and largely vote as such (which is why our state GOP is at each other's throats). Since they wanted to serve the public, running as a Democrat would've stood in the way of that, so they went for the other option.
It's why the national party really needs to pull together and come up with a 50-state strategy. If they can't within the next election cycle, they might as well withdraw from certain states and allow the Democrats left in them to form a new entity that can compete with the GOP and doesn't have the "D" by their names. Probably won't happen if we lose in 2018 ... but if we lose again in 2020 (not reclaim the house, senate, presidency or majority of state governments), the Democratic Party is done as a national entity.
