(63 posts)52. Polar opposites politically but similar childhoods
I am a yellow dog Democrat from a long line of progressives but my father was a Naval officer and my life was defined by my early experiences. My brother flew F-4s in two tours in VietNam (which nearly split our family even then). then,my mother died of brain cancer, too. So, John McCain was a complicated man who was not my choice for any post, but I see the common thread woven between peoples' lives and I am so sorry he was so ill at the end; he had paid his dues long ago. Go back to the wild blue yonder, young man!

He had the courage to stand by his convictions - a rarity in politics. May he rest in peace.
