Then I think they're wrong in doing so. Like I said, the kid has/had no choice in the matter, and has no clue about why someone would be upset about his costume.
Then again, this is an asshole asserting such, so it's possible you're right and the vitriol was directed entirely at the asshole. Not having been there, there's no way I can know which is which.
In any case, I can't imagine any situation in which it's okay to scream at and/or threaten a 5-year-old. I can, however, imagine someone being so furious and outraged that they did so in the heat of the moment. Anger can make people do and say things they would never normally do or say.
