(714 posts)I think my brother and sister-in-law are good examples of a lot of folks.
They're both nice, friendly, decent people. They work respectable jobs. Have one child (a daughter) and are loving parents. They own a house in the suburbs that's a tad too large and too expensive for their means, but got help from family. Bills stress them but they're luckily not on the edge in any way (no major debts, no serious medical conditions, etc.). They aren't devout Christians but go on holidays.
Politically though they seem completely clueless. To the best of my knowledge, they don't read newspapers or even watch much cable news (except sports). They travel a lot for vacations (even abroad), but largely stick to tourist-safe stuff and are not particularly adventurous. They have a passing knowledge of stuff like ongoing wars, climate change, etc. but could never discuss it in detail and definitely aren't involved in any activism or advocacy in any way.
They are not Republicans or conservatives, but I wouldn't call them Democrats either. They'd vote for whoever seems okay to them at the time based upon the limited range of their knowledge and experience. In discussions about Trump, my sister-in-law will say things like, "I know a lot of people are mad at him, but I don't know why."
They'd certainly never go to a Trump rally or harass minorities or anything like that. But frankly, they and many others are passive enablers of a lot of the awful stuff in the country today.
