DOVER, Del. President Biden will arrive here later Sunday to honor the U.S. troops killed last week in Afghanistan and meet with their families, the White House said.
Biden will arrive at Dover Air Force Base Sunday morning, where he and first lady Jill Biden will meet with families of service members who were killed, according to the White House.
At noon, Biden will participate in whats known as a dignified transfer ceremony an official proceeding for transferring the remains of members of the military killed in their deployments. Thirteen U.S. service members were killed in a terrorist attack outside the Kabul airport on Thursday believed to have been committed by the group Islamic State-Khorasan.
Approximately 2,900 people were evacuated from Kabul from Saturday at 3 a.m. to Sunday at 3 a.m. Eastern, according to the White House. Thirty-two U.S. military flights transported about 2,200 evacuees, and nine coalition flights carried 700 people, the White House said. Since Aug. 14, the United States has evacuated and facilitated the evacuation of about 114,400 people, the White House said Sunday.
