I was not talking about "today".

In my reply title - At one time in the past

It was a poor attempt to be an alternative to the "downers" made famous in the book (and later film) "Valley of the Dolls" (a film I finally finally managed to view not long ago after reading the book way way back).

(and was even a drug of choice for suicide attempts)

"Attempt" does not equal "success". It means that it was reflecting one of the types of side-effects that we still hear mentioned in some of the pharma ads seen on TV today and are usually listed in the black box inserts for those drugs (including drugs used for those with various bipolar disorders), i.e., "may cause 'suicidal thoughts'".

I remember in the early '70s after my father died, my mother's doctors gave her a prescription for valium. She did not take to it well and zoned out at one point. I remember me and my sisters dumping the bottle of them in the toilet.
